WEEK 1 LABOUR DAY WEEKEND - Monday 2 May is Labour Day
|
|
Sun 1 May Pleasant Sunday Afternoon Variety Concert CCSA Hall Nutley St, Caloundra 2pm Sunday May 1st is not only ‘May Day’ & a holiday weekend straight after Easter &
Anzac Day, but it is also the start of the Pleasant Sunday Afternoon (PSA) concert series for 2011. These very popular variety concerts are held from 2pm on the first Sundays of the months from 1 May up to 3 October 2011, with
different artists each month. The venue is the CCSA Hall in Nutley St., Caloundra, and up to 200 people attend at a cost of only $9 which includes afternoon tea.
In the merry month of May, the variety could hardly be more diverse! The Caloundra Chorale will showcase their harmonious expertise in 4 songs, whilst Neil Booth's assortment of guitarists-come-singers will be
more of a comedy act rather than quality act. It will certainly be an enjoyable surprise whatever they do. Helen Duffy is the Chorale's femme fatale in their current Maltese Falcon play: however, she will sing songs from her
next lead role in the Chorale's Little Shop of Horrors. Other artists are brilliant young flautist Jessica Norup, award-winning actress Maralyn Davies, singers Bev Gourlay & Aart Schouten. Of special interest will be
the actors Ben Adams & Amanda Swanson (respectively seen as the Minstrel & Nanny Craddock in the Chorale's 2011 Pantomime Sleeping Beauty) who will sing for a change, instead of just prancing around the stage. They
promise some comedy songs.
There'll be a Pachelbel Canon duet on piano & cello, Sophia's Flight of the Bumblebee on keyboard, and the concerts always end with Bev singing the verse & testing the
audience with "What song is this". These concerts raise funds for the Caloundra Chorale, and have been in operation for approx 30 years. They're always full of fun & talent, so come along on May Day (Sunday 1st)
to the CCSA Hall, Nutley St., Caloundra. There's no need to book, just arrive around 1.30pm to get a seat & buy a raffle ticket. Check out the Chorale's website on www.caloundrachorale.com.au

Thu 5 May @ 8pm Sunshine Coast Blues Club Royal
George Hotel Currie St Nambour 1st Thursday of the month Since the first meeting at the Royal George Hotel in Feb 06 , the Sunshine Coast Blues Club has provided members & visitors with a simple & successful
recipe. The regular audience is always there by 8pm to see the Blues Club “House Band” start the night with a set of blues favourites. Al Hensley (piano) & Bob Lee (double bass) enjoy the opportunity to present some
lesser known & seldom performed blues to a receptive audience. Al’s encyclopaedic knowledge of the blues, plus his willingness to share his knowledge, makes each performance an education for club members. The house band
is rounded out with Aaron Giffin on guitar, Joanne Lee on drums & Fabio Brecciaroli joining in on blues harp. The Nambour Blues Club has quietly established itself as a welcome event on the first Thursday of each month. The
combination of dependable quality music from the house band & the regular performers, plus the unexpected & surprising contributions from guest jammers, makes for a great night of Blues in Nambour.

SAVE THE DATE Fri 13 to Sun 15 May The Australian Body Art
Carnivale 2011 Various venues in Eumundi The Australian Body Art Carnivale promises to be bigger & brighter in 2011, with competitors and spectators in for a feast of colour, creativity, music & good
times. This year will see an expansion of all elements of the festival, with an overriding theme of MAGIC. The Carnivale will again be ‘A Festival of Colour’ centred around body art in its many &
varied forms. Spectators will be amazed as they watch artists using the human body as both their inspiration & canvas. Launch and Masked Gallery Walk (Friday night) The
Carnivale will kick off with a gala launch on the Friday evening from 6pm, followed by the main event for the night - the Masked Gallery Walk. This exciting event brings together 6 galleries from Eumundi’s
‘Memorial Drive’ teaming together to show art lovers that the cultural hub of Eumundi is a destination for quality artwork. $45 tickets for the night include drinks & tapas at each gallery, plus a beautiful
mask to get you in the mood for a wonderful night - and indeed weekend - of fun & celebrating the arts. Phone Steve Beardsley on 0400 716 526 to book your ticket for a night not to
be missed!
Competitions and exhibitions (Saturday & Sunday) Sat 14 & Sun 15 May will see a kaleidoscope of competitions & exhibitions. Body art As the name suggests, the Australian Body Art Carnivale has a strong focus on body art – from the more readily seen face painting right through to full body painting in the
categories of brush & sponge, airbrush & special effects. The theme for all 2011 body art category competitions is MAGIC. While many experienced body artists will compete, body art experience is not a
prerequisite. Some entrants in previous years had never before painted on a body – they simply used their artistic flair to work on a very different canvas … the human body! Entrants in the face painting
competition must work independently, while entrants in the full body art competition categories can team up with an assistant if they wish. Saturday
will see competitions in airbrush & brush & sponge body art, followed by a parade then announcement of the winners. Sunday
will see competitions in face painting & special effects, again followed by a parade then announcement of the winners. And it’s not just body art competitions. The Carnivale will also host competitions and exhibitions in:
Pavement art We have had pavement art displays by the Chalkwits in previous years, but 2011 will see another pavement art comp (chalk art on the streets). We can't
wait! The competition will happen before your eyes on Sunday morning, with the theme of MAGIC. Wearable art Wearable art is a big part of the Australian Body Art
Carnivale, & this year's parade & competition will take place on Sun 15 May. The theme for 2011 is also MAGIC. Wearable Art was introduced to the Australian Body Art Carnivale in 2008, with parades
showcasing original designs created from reused materials. Entrants can either create their design independently, or team up with fellow students, friends or colleagues & create a work of wearable art together.
Judges look for creative edge & originality of material, so designers are encouraged to "think outside the square". Creations do not have to be practical or commercially viable; they just have to be WEARABLE.
Vehicle body art The Wicked Campers Vehicle Body Art Competitions are a new inclusion for the Carnivale in 2011. And there are two chances to win -
the Wicked Campers Show & Shine Competition & the Wicked Camper Vehicle Art Competition! We're calling on car, bike, van or truck owners with special body paintwork to enter their prized vehicles.
Vehicle owners - who may or may not be the artists - are encouraged to bring their 4-wheeled works of art along on Sun 15 May. And for those with artistic talents, there is the opportunity to submit an artwork design
to paint onto a blank canvas Wicked Camper. Five submissions will be chosen to enter the Wicked Camper Vehicle Art competition and they will paint a Wicked Camper on Sat 14 May at the Australian Body Art Carnivale. Their entries
will then be judged on Sunday. Photography The Australian Body Art Carnivale is jam-packed full of photographic opportunities. It's a chance to work with unique
"talent" & by registering as a competitor, you'll receive unique access to competitors & models. It's also an opportunity to enter the Australian Body Art Carnivale photography competition (with
categories in photo print & digital art) and be in the running for great prizes. Visual art A visual art exhibition & competition called Art of the Body is a
highlight of the Australian Body Art Carnivale. The exhibition & competition is organised by Arts for Community. Art of the Body seeks to celebrate the human form, & artworks exhibited can be paintings, miniatures, or
three dimensional art. All artworks exhibited are for sale, & artists are also in the running for a number of prizes & awards. Competition details have been released and registrations are still open in all
categories. Visit www.australianbodyart.com.au to download entry forms to take part. It will be an experience you will never forget. While there are some generous prizes up for grabs, participating in itself will be a buzz!
Music & more Music will form a major part of this year’s Carnivale, with the free EUMUNDI LIVE music festival being held in Caplick Park as part of the Carnivale
celebrations on Saturday & Sunday. The Carnivale will also see world-class street performers & buskers, craft workshops, a Saturday evening sunset street party from 6pm – 7pm, plus a whole lot more.
Don’t miss this crazy, colourful weekend!

special kind of musical magic.
With their exquisite three-part harmonies, soaring vocals and stunning onstage presence, it’s not surprising that The McClymonts have taken the Australian music scene’s
collective breath away. Since forming just a few short years ago, and releasing their debut album, Chaos and Bright Lights, they’ve dominated the Country Music Awards of Australia’s Group of the Year
category, winning the Golden Guitar three years in a row.
We wanted to make a positive, warm, spontaneous album. We’re all in a really good place at the moment - both in our personal lives and
professionally and the album really reflects that, Samantha said.
Even the songs that aren’t about happy things have a sense of being in control of your life, of moving in a good direction. Soaring
throughout the album are the sublime vocal harmonies that are the calling card of this talented trio - a sound that is attracting international attention to their talent. Tickets: Adult $38, Child $23 Ph: 5438
